Johan Kegler was born in 1980 and attended high school in Berlin. He graduated from the University of Constance with a diploma in history, politics, art and media in 2007. He holds a German Rowing Association coaching «A-License» as well as a master’s degree in competitive sports (Berlin, 2011).
Kegler began rowing at age 10 in the Berlin Rowing Club, where he qualified for the Berlin youth squad. His accomplishments as an athlete include twice placing runner-up in the Swiss Championships, qualification for the Student World Championships in 2006 (9th place) and two bronze medals at the Student European Championships in 2005 and 2006. All of these were obtained in the men’s pair.
He began coaching at age 18 in the Berlin Rowing Club and later worked as assistant coach alongside world-famous coaches in Canada and Switzerland. Kegler was recently employed as a federation coach and school trainer in Berlin. In 2008 and 2009 he gained valuable experience in teamwork and dynamics during seven months sailing on the Atlantic Ocean, where he worked as a teacher and project manager for the «Sailing Classroom» project.
Alongside his activities as a coach on the water, Kegler works as a teacher in sports and history and founded OceanCollege, his own company that takes students on a traditional sailing vessel across the Atlantic Ocean and back over six months.
